Why I sometimes ride in the sidewalk

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

As I’ve noted before, I commute by bike in warm weather.  I take Washtenaw Avenue, which has no bike lanes, from my home all the way up to the Medical Campus.  Because of the aforementioned lack of bike lanes, the high speed limits, and the heavy traffic on this road during my commute hours, I ride mostly on the sidewalk along Washtenaw, contrary to the official state guidelines.

I understand the reasoning behind the League of Michigan Bicyclist’s rule that cyclists should ride in the road, because for various reasons, it’s generally unsafe to ride in sidewalks.  I try to comply with this rule in high-density, slow-traffic areas like downtown Ann Arbor, or in Detroit where the roads typically have plenty of empty lanes.

But I think it’s stupid to say bikes shouldn’t use the sidewalks on stretches of road like Washtenaw which have heavy traffic and high speed limits.  Yes, drivers are supposed to share the road, but on the few times I’ve rode in the street I’ve feared for my life.  Even when following the rules of the road, halting at red lights (which I always do) and sticking to the right hand lanes, I’ve encountered hostility from drivers who want to kill me.  Meanwhile, for most of Washtenaw, the pedestrian presence on the side walk is pretty light.  I slow down and look carefully for drivers whenever I reach an intersection, and halt if I’m not absolutely sure a driver will yield right of way.  When I do get stuck behind a pedestrian, I slow down and go around them, usually on the grass.  I don’t care what the official guidelines are.  They are simply not appropriate for the particular conditions of the route I take, and I don’t see how mindlessly following them makes any sense.

Buttigieg Ready to Use ‘Privileges’ to Tear Down ‘Walls’ Between Oppressed Groups

South Bend Mayor and Democratic presidential contender Pete Buttigieg used a campaign rally on Saturday to address concerns that running as a white man from a privileged background could keep him from understanding female and minority issues.

“I may be part of the L.G.B.T.Q. community. But being a gay man doesn’t even tell me what it’s like to be a trans woman of color in that same community, let alone an undocumented mother of four or a disabled veteran or a displaced autoworker,” Buttigieg said at the event hosted by the Human Rights Campaign.

Buttigieg’s rallies have been filled with a mostly white audience. He has had rapid and incredible success fundraising – his campaign wallet is fuller than the majority of his Democratic rivals. His donors and supporters include some of the wealthiest LGBT people in the country, from television producer Richie Jackson to Bryan Rafanelli and Mark Walsh, longtime confidants of the Clintons.

However, Buttigieg has admitted that his “first serious mistake as mayor” was firing Darryl Boykins, South Bend’s first ever Black police chief, after Boykins recorded phone conversations of his officers saying racist things. The officers didn’t know they were being recorded and Boykins confronted them about it.

The officers reported Boykins to the FBI, which resulted in a wiretapping investigation. Buttigieg came under fire when he kept the information about the investigation to himself and then abruptly asked for Boykins resignation two months later without even listening to the tapes.

Buttigieg and chief of staff Mike Schmuhl were later sued for “racial animus” by Boykins. Police Communications Director Karen DePaepe, whose recordings of the conversations led to the FBI being notified by the officers, sued for wrongful termination. Both lawsuits led to settlements by the city in 2013 for $575,000.

U.P. tribe hopes to regulate their water

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

The Environmental Protection Agency is currently seeking public comment on an application for the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) to set their own water quality standards. The KBIC is based out of L'Anse Township in the Upper Peninsula.

Stephanie Cree, water resources specialist for the tribe, says they would be the first one in Michigan to have that authority.

“It's gonna allow us to set our own water quality standards for the waters here on the reservation, where right now we follow the standards of state and federal guidelines," she says.

Cree says that if their application is approved, the tribe would be able to regulate on or off-reservation polluters if they are affecting waters on the reservation. The tribe wants their standards to be more stringent than EPA standards, but Cree says they won’t make any of them unreachable.

“We have close to 15 years of water data that we'll look at from the waters we've tested here, from the past," she says. "We're gonna take all that into account.”

KBIC's Natural Resources Director Evelyn Ravindran says they want to keep current water quality for now.

“Where there is impairments that we see, maybe we see it as more of a long-term goal that gradually those standards change over time," she says.

The tribe wants standards on the reservation to be more protective, because they are more exposed to environmental contamination through fishing, hunting and gathering practices.

They also see stewardship of the water as a cultural responsibility. Ravindran says they hope to someday be able to set their own air quality standards as well. They want air quality on the reservation to be regulated at standards similar to those for a wilderness area.

Stephanie Cree says there are other tribes in Wisconsin and Minnesota that have approval to regulate their own water quality, and she hopes it will spread through Michigan.

“After we get approved, I hope that other tribes will follow us," she says.

The public comment period for the tribe’s application ends May 23.

Bucks cruise to Game 3 win against Pistons despite Blake Griffin's return

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Detroit Pistons star Blake Griffin made his return to the lineup on Saturday afternoon in the Motor City — a welcome sign for Pistons fans who are still looking for their first postseason win.

Griffin’s return, though, simply wasn’t enough.

The Pistons fell to the Milwaukee Bucks 119-103 at Little Ceasars Arena, marking their 13th-straight playoff loss, tied for the most in NBA playoff history.

While the Pistons jumped out of the gate hot, mounting several small leads in the opening minutes, their success didn’t last long. The Bucks — despite a scoreless opening period from Giannis Antetokounmpo, which was just his second all season — closed the quarter on a 13-2 run and never looked back, cruising to the 16-point win and the commanding 3-0 series lead.

Khris Middleton led the Bucks with 20 points and nine rebounds. Eric Bledsoe and Brook Lopez each dropped 19 points, and Ersan Ilyasova added 15 off the bench. Antetokounmpo finished with a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

While the focus all year has been on Antetokounmpo, and rightfully so, Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said it was the team effort that shined on Saturday — and that’s what can make the difference for them this season.

“I think it’s something we’ve been trying to build all year,” Budenholzer said. “We’re a team that plays together, trying to take what the defense gives us. Guys have opportunities, guys have a lot of confidence to make plays. It’s not just all about Giannis, as amazing and great as he is.”

Griffin was doubtful to play at all this weekend while recovering from a left knee injury he sustained at the end of the regular season. It was a rough stretch for the Pistons without their All-Star — who averaged 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.4 assists this year — too, as they fell in their first two games by 35 points and 21 points, respectively.

Griffin seemingly didn’t miss a beat on Saturday, leading the Pistons with 27 points and seven rebounds. Reggie Jackson added 15 points, and Wayne Ellington finished with 13 points.

Game 4 of the series will take place on Monday night in Detroit, where the Bucks can grab their first playoff series win since 2001.
